FC. Slug, (Graf Spee)
Damaged German pocket battleship, in Montevideo harbor
Montevideo, Uruguay ................ via radio from Buenos Aires comes this closeup view of the damaged Nazi pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in port at Montevideo, Uruguay. The Nazi battleship was badly mauled in fourteen-hour-long running fight with three British cruisers off the Uruguayan coast. Thirty-six men of her crew were killed and she was hit by forty shells before she managed to reach the shelter of Montevideo's neutral harbor. Repair work is being rushed -- Uruguay is giving the German vessel only until Friday midnight (December 15th) to leave the port -- after that she will be interned. Meanwhile a gathering fleet of British war vessels waits for her outside the harbor. The circle and the arrow here indicate shell scars near the water-line of the Admiral Graf Spee.
