Slug (German Sub)
German submarine "shot" by U.S. camera
St. Louis, Mo.....This photograph of a German submarine was made in the harbor of Curacao, Dutch West Indies, --by Mr. and Mrs. Earl O. Mills, of St. Louis, who were passengers on the now-famous cruise of the German liner Columbus from New York. The Columbus was at sea with her crowd of vacationists when news came that war in Europe was imminent. The ship received orders to return at once to Germany. Refused permission to land the cruisists at three ports, the Columbus finally dumped them in Havana, Cuba. Unable to dodge the British Navy, which she would have to do to return to Bremen, Germany, her home port, the Columbus went to Vera Cruz, Mexico, where it probably remain for duration of the war. The cruisists dumped in Havana were ferried to Miami, Fla., by the S.S. Florida.
